SRAM Corporation engaged Perkins+Will to design their new 72,000 SF headquarters in the vibrant Fulton Market District of Chicago. Initial visioning uncovered SRAM’s desire for a space that connected their staff by providing them choices through many collaborative space types and cultivating an active and fun workplace that celebrates their rich brand story. An additional component of the vision was the integration of SRAM’s product development spaces, including a working lab, machine shop, and test track as a central feature.
The 1/8 mile test track winds through the office, stitching the large open floor neighborhoods together. Along the track are several types of open and enclosed meeting spaces, providing multiple options for collaboration. Also integrated into the workplace are commuter and test bikes, serving as screens along the bike track and open office neighborhoods. A flexible café and open-air terrace function as all-day working spaces, a place for coffee breaks and casual meetings, and for facilitating larger events and social gatherings such as viewing stages of the Tour de France. The resulting design is punctuated by the SRAM red, a branding mark utilized in a controlled way to tell the story of the company’s product offerings, philanthropy, and biking culture.
