Area Sq has developed the initial phase of a new office location for appliance manufacturer Smeg located in London.
Domestic appliances manufacturer, Smeg UK has achieved substantial UK market growth and acquired the 43,000 sq ft three-story Magna building to support their on-going expansion. The initial phase implemented the design and fit-out of the building’s first floor so it could be operational during the rest of the project programme.
Departing from their previous cellular office system, the open plan work environment encourages staff interaction through collaboration zones. Breakout areas have been installed to provide informal meeting space. To aid clean air circulation, two living walls were installed along with plant dividers adjacent to work stations. Acknowledging Smeg’s sophisticated design heritage, the workspace has been stylishly designed with a muted palette and good quality materials. Tea points were fitted out with Smeg products including fridges, kettles and sinks.
The Magna building has a unique concrete coffered ceiling, cooling system which made coordination of services challenging. To solve this, a system of free standing cellular spaces were built independent from the ceiling. The freestanding boxes were designed to be used as offices, meeting rooms and collaboration space.
